IT Staffing Options

When we started IntegriSource, Inc years ago, we were faced with a simple, yet complex question; what type of staffing solutions will we provide? On the surface, it is a straight forward question, but the answer to the question is where it gets more complex. The quick answer was contract staff augmentation. That sounded good, but then you quickly realize that it doesn’t allow IntegriSource to be a staffing solution provider. Instead, it quickly narrowed the market we wanted to support and in doing so, it spawned the real question we were concerned about and that was “What do our clients want? That question is the one that drives our business.

Today, companies both large and small face recruiting and staffing issues. They need qualified resources to fill their critical needs as well as the permanent employees who are vital to their daily operations. Some companies fall between the two. They want the speed of bringing on a contract resource but want the option to hire them down the road to fill a permanent role in the company.

Secretary Jobs Nationwide

While secretary jobs are often thought of as being entry-level, the duties and responsibilities of the average secretary have increased dramatically with the widespread use of computers to perform many of the tasks that were once performed manually or on paper. Since information technology transformed the secretarial position in the 1980s and into the 1990s, familiarity with the most popular word processing and spreadsheet software applications is a near “must” for an aspiring secretary. As such, a secretary is probably more accurately referred to as an administrator or administrative assistant or, if working specifically with an executive, an executive assistant.

There is almost never a shortage of secretary jobs, as executives, business, organizations, schools and other entities are almost always in need of a skilled administrator to keep an office running smoothly.

Warehouse Jobs Popular with a Wide Variety of Candidates

Most folks hear “warehouse job” and they think of long hours spent in unusual shifts loading pallets or counting inventory. To be fair, some employment positions in warehouses are exactly that, as most operate 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, using three shifts to cover the 24 hours. There is also quite a bit of manual labor involved in warehouse employment, including the aforementioned loading of pallets.

Warehouse jobs, however, are not limited to such positions. Warehouse are typically maintained by warehouse managers and supervisors and also employ logistics specialists, shipping managers, logistics software specialists, database managers, and any number of other positions that people don’t typically think of in association with a warehouse.

Help Desk Jobs Still Popular

Among those working in the IT field, help desk jobs are often the first steppingstone in a long and successful career. Those working on a help desk or service desk for an IT company often become IT generalists, though product-specific help desk jobs may often lead to a narrower understanding of technology as a whole. Nonetheless, and despite the fact that many call center and help desk positions are being outsourced overseas, there are still a number of positions available with smaller firms in the U.S. and they will typically serve as a good entry point for those with an IT education background but without specific employment experience in the field.

Real Estate Careers

We know what you’re thinking…you must be crazy if you think it’s a good time to begin a career in real estate. The current economic climate in the U.S., and in the world for that matter, is such that “upheaval” is not a strong enough word to describe what’s going on. What’s more, the whole crisis began with a series of questionable, sub-prime mortgages made by unscrupulous mortgage brokers to unsuspecting (and, quite frankly, not very bright) home buyers. It snowballed once Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac “warehoused” the loans and then got yet more complicated when the loans were bundled into securities that are now the so-called “toxic assets” rotting away on the balance sheets of the big New York investment houses.

From the contrarian perspective, however, now is a great time not only to buy real estate (rates are low if you can get a mortgage, and home prices are plummeting), but also to begin a career in real estate. Now, hear me out on the real estate careers option…the training to become an agent varies by state, but in Maryland a fairly intensive course of study lasts for about two months. To truly get one’s feet wet requires probably another 1-2 years, during which time one learns by minor mistakes and from experience. Finally, so many real estate agents who were never really going to make it in th first place have been jumping ship with the turning of the market from “boom” to “bust,” and even though there are fewer homes being sold (and at lower prices), there are also fewer agents to compete with.

What this all adds up to is a good opportunity for those gutsy enough to go firmly against the grain of “group thought” or, in the case of the American public right now “mass thought,” and get in while the rest of the world is getting out.

NICU Jobs for RNs, Respiratory Therapists

Within the healthcare field there are, of course, a variety of specialties pursued by both doctors and nurses. Though we don’t necessarily specialize in placing medical employees, we still have our finger firmly on the pulse of that particular market, and here in Maryland, as well as throughout the country, there is a growing need, in general, for highly qualified Registered Nurses. For those seeking specialized NICU jobs, there is even more demand, as the specialty generally requires greater experience in the field and the strict standards used within Neonatal Intensive Care Units are generally maintained and enforced with gusto.

Though RNs are generally in the so-called “driver’s seat” when it comes to selecting their employer due to the massive demand for qualified Registered Nurses, the tables turn a bit for the specialty positions, and the NICUs and PICUs of the nation’s hospitals remain a point of emphasis.

IT Hiring Continues Full Force

Perhaps it’s the weather and a sense of rejuvenation that comes with Spring, or perhaps it’s just that I’m involved in the business of IT jobs and staffing on a daily basis. Whatever the case may be, it appears to me that the number of employers seeking qualified IT employees over the past several months has been growing, with a particular emphasis coming in just the past two weeks.

This could really be anecdotal, and due entirely to greater visibility of our web sites, or it could be that IT candidates are crawling out of hibernation that Winter sometimes brings to jump-start their careers. In either instance, the effect here has been tremendous, as we’ve seen an influx of highly qualified candidates coming in and, serendipitously, a larger-than-usual number of potential clients seeking to hire.

Most positions are for permanent and contract-to-permanent, which is a bit of a departure from what we’ve seen in-house recently, where shorter 3-6 month contracts for project-specific needs were the norm.
