Nurse Levels to be Voted on in Massachusetts

By: Matt, May 17th, 2006

As mentioned previously on the Insource Staffing blog, May 23 will bring a vote on nursing levels in state hospitals in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Massachusetts nurses, the Massachusetts State Hospital Association and various leaders in the state House of Representatives will present legislation calling on state health officials to place limits on nurses’ patient assignments, specifically to limit the number of patients that nurses are required to care for at one time.

Less publicized, but also crucial to the legislation are provisions that prohibit mandatory overtime and plans to increase both nurse faculty and nurse recruiting. The pending legislation would call for specific levels to be developed within 18 months and implementation in 2008 and 2010 for teaching hospitals and community hospitals, respectively.
