Video Profiles Add Personal Touch to Resumes

By: Matt, July 27th, 2006

After looking around some of the emerging and established vlogs, most notably Ze Frank’s The Show, I have been reminded that video is still the most engaging form of media in existence. Although video isn’t necessarily interactive, high quality video content coupled with interactive features such as blogs and/or comment forums can really capture the attention of viewers/visitors/users, etc. Clearly, with the emergence of MySpace.com and the countless other “friend portals”, most everyone is aware that a short video clip can provide unique insight into someone’s personality and overall presence.

In the recruiting world, the inclusion of a video clip or even a static digital photo by job applicants is a relatively new phenomenon — although one that will be growing rapidly. With all of the legal and ethical requirements that are woven throughout the hiring process in almost any company, one could argue that having a visual representation of candidates could create more problems than it solves. But that’s probably a short-sighted approach. When created with the intent of explaining basic professional experiences, strengths, goals, etc., a personal video clip can be an invaluable addition to a polished resume from the perspective of both job seeker and recruiter.

Some sites such as Gettinghired.com and Market10.com are already incorporating the personal video profile as part of their standard options for new candidates/job seekers. These sites are a step beyond traditional job boards in that they promise a more personalized job seeking experience, but I would expect the behemoths like Monster.com and CareerBuilder.com to implement video profile capability for job seekers in the immediate future — if they haven’t already.
