IT Recruiting for Dummies

By: mawist, September 26th, 2007

Not really for dummies, just for the people in HR that find themselves overwhelmed when asked to identify, screen and hire the best IT candidate for a specific position. Obviously, HR professionals have their hands full with every other aspect of the employment life cycle, so recruiting is only one piece of their daily puzzle. But IT recruiting and staffing is a different animal altogether. Sometimes, the best IT candidate would be absolutely inappropriate for any other position in a company. Some of the best IT candidates around know their technology inside and out - and very little else. This may seem like I’m stereotyping here - and I am to a degree - but I’ve met many IT wizards that I would never allow to speak to a client or prospective business partner.

This makes them difficult to screen for most HR professionals. Unless you are a legitimate IT guru (and why would you be in HR if you were), you are probably not qualified to screen some of these candidates. They simply know too much about their respective areas of expertise. HR professionals are usually not equipped to handle that type of screening.

The solution is to outsource IT recruiting to a professional IT staffing firm that has the IT recruiters available to thoroughly screen potential candidates. Another huge advantage to outsourcing your IT recruiting is that your company is never stuck with a candidate that turns out to be unfit for the position. Let’s face it, even the best HR people make bad hires. And maybe a great IT recruiting firm will as well - but let that be their problem and NOT yours. If the candidate isn’t working out, a new one is only a phone call away.
