Among those working in the IT field, help desk jobs are often the first steppingstone in a long and successful career. Those working on a help desk or service desk for an IT company often become IT generalists, though product-specific help desk jobs may often lead to a narrower understanding of technology as a whole. Nonetheless, and despite the fact that many call center and help desk positions are being outsourced overseas, there are still a number of positions available with smaller firms in the U.S. and they will typically serve as a good entry point for those with an IT education background but without specific employment experience in the field.
