While secretary jobs are often thought of as being entry-level, the duties and responsibilities of the average secretary have increased dramatically with the widespread use of computers to perform many of the tasks that were once performed manually or on paper. Since information technology transformed the secretarial position in the 1980s and into the 1990s, familiarity with the most popular word processing and spreadsheet software applications is a near “must” for an aspiring secretary. As such, a secretary is probably more accurately referred to as an administrator or administrative assistant or, if working specifically with an executive, an executive assistant.

There is almost never a shortage of secretary jobs, as executives, business, organizations, schools and other entities are almost always in need of a skilled administrator to keep an office running smoothly.
